Many habit apps call themselves free, then lock everything at the fourth habit or after a 7-day trial. So we sorted them with one question: what can you really do without paying?
Quick answer: for free habit tracking with a real game (quests, hero, chests), RPG Habit is our top pick. For a 100% free RPG with friends, Habitica. For minimalist tracking with no ads and no account, Loop Habit Tracker on Android.
Disclosure: RPG Habit is developed by the team behind this website. We built this ranking as honestly as we could, weaknesses included, and we encourage you to try each app’s free version yourself.

The 2026 ranking
1. RPG Habit: the most game for free
RPG Habit’s free version covers the essentials: create habits with a name, color and icon, complete them with one tap, follow your streaks and heatmap, and level up your hero with the XP, coins and gems you earn. The 4 daily quests, the monthly quest and its gear chest are included.
- Free: habit tracking, numeric goals, reminders, stats, quests, hero and gear, friends.
- Optional premium: to go further, without locking the core of the app.
- Data: no data shared with third parties according to the Google Play listing, account deletion on request.
Cons: new app, available on Android for now. Best for: people who want video-game motivation without a credit card.

2. Habitica: the classic free RPG
Open source, Habitica offers the whole core game for free. The subscription only unlocks cosmetics. The best free choice for playing in a group, despite a dated interface.
3. Loop Habit Tracker: 100% free, zero ads
On Android, Loop has no in-app purchases, no ads and no account. Unlimited habits, widgets, data export. No gamification, but unbeatable on price.
4. Finch: free wellbeing
Finch’s free version gives you daily goals, journaling and your little companion. Finch Plus adds content. Perfect if you want gentleness rather than challenge.
5. Habitify: good, but limited to 3 habits
Habitify is clean and synced across devices, but the free version stops at 3 habits. Beyond that, you need premium.
6. Do It Now: free, but with ads
A very complete RPG to-do list on Android, with characteristics and skills that grow. The free version shows ads.
The 3 traps of “free” habit apps
- The habit limit: 3 free habits is reached quickly.
- The disguised trial: everything locks after 7 days. Look for “free trial”.
- Paid history: without history, you cannot see your progress.
